Avoid leaving furniture in sunlight as sunlight can cause fabrics or woods to fade in a very short period of time. Prolonged exposure to the sun can also cause the fibres that make up the fabric to break down and become weak. This can be pronounced in areas such as conservatories and care must be taken to avoid damage.

Upholstery & Leather Furniture Care Tips

Fabrics & Upholstery Care

Keeping your fabrics and upholstery in the best condition possible is important, here are some tips for ensuring your upholstered furniture looks fresher for longer:

  • Regular light brushing is recommended to avoid overall soiling
  • Cushions and pillows should be turned on a weekly basis to ensure even use
  • Regular plumping of cushions will ensure your upholstery continues to look its best
  • For spills and stains blot the area working from the outside in – do not use steam cleaners

Leather Care

Leather comes in many forms, from full to semi aniline leather. Semi aniline leathers give increased durability as a layer of protection is added to the leather. Full aniline leathers are more susceptible to stains and marks as they receive less treatment.

  • Leather surfaces should be dusted regularly with a dry soft cloth
  • Spills should be dealt with immediately – do not let spills soak in
  • Regular plumping of cushions will ensure your upholstery continues to look its best
  • Leather conditioners can be used periodically to maintain the appearance of leather

It is important to remember that leather is a natural material and part of it’s charm is that it reacts to environmental factors and continues to change over time. Marks will invariably collect (particularly with full aniline leather) but this should be seen as part of the natural ageing process rather than a fault.

Wood & Painted Furniture Care Tips

Solid Wood Furniture

Waxed furniture made from solid wood does not require special care. However, we would like to suggest the following for it’s use:

  • In order to prevent the furniture from drying out we recommend regularly airing premises
  • Surfaces should be cleaned with just a dry cloth
  • During the first 10 weeks of ownership one should not leave objects in the same place for a prolonged period
  • Sharp, rigid and wet objects can leave tracks on the surface, avoid contact where possible
  • Waxed items of furniture will benefit from a periodic coat of fresh wax

Wood Veneer Furniture

Wood veneers are used for increased durability but veneer furniture still requires attention, we suggest the following:

  • Dust regularly with a dry cloth, the motion of the cloth should be in line with the grain
  • To reduce the risk of damage ensure precautions are taken when placing items on your furniture
  • Sharp, rigid and wet objects can leave tracks on the surface, avoid contact where possible
  • Any spills should be dealt with immediately using a dry cloth

Painted Furniture

The nature of painted furniture results in slightly different finishes for each piece produced. Hairline cracks will likely be present at time of purchase and overtime more will appear, this is a natural part of the ageing process for painted furniture and gives it a unique character. We would recommend the following care tips:

  • Ensure contact with water and excessive heat are kept to a minimum
  • For cleaning use a slightly damp soapy cloth and dry with a second cloth immediately
  • Sharp, rigid and wet objects can leave tracks on the surface, avoid contact where possible
  • Any spills should be dealt with immediately using a dry cloth
